East Herts Church Choirs Association

Compline Workshop and Service 2025

This was another opportunity to learn about singing plainsong and reading from neumes in the context of the quiet service of Compline – An Order for Night Prayer. Led by Derek Harrison.

The event followed the plan as outlined beforehand (as noted below). We were pleased to have nearly 20 singers – and that we had heated pew seats in both the choir area and in the chancel! We were very grateful for the tea/coffee and biscuits that were provided by members of the church and to our own Chairman and Secretary for additional delicious cakes.

The service took place in the chancel with an atmospheric array of candles. Our Chaplain was the Cantor. It was very good to be joined by around 8 members of the St Andrews congregation.

DATE/VENUE: Saturday 22nd February 2025; Venue: St Andrews, Church Lane, Much Hadham SG10 6DH (http://www.riverashchurches.org.uk/)

TIMES: WORKSHOP 3.00; REHEARSAL 4.15; SERVICE 6.00

The first session will look at musical notation briefly but the notation of neumes in particular (using the Compline music for practice). That includes listening to the opening of Duruflé’s Requiem noticing how exactly he follows the plainsong for the opening; likewise the Toccata on Ave Maris Stella by Flor Peeters. We then rehearse all of the music the service including the anthem (tbd). A congregation is very welcome to experience this lovely service in a special setting. The choir does not robe for this service.

Between the rehearsal and service, tea/cakes will be provided for all those taking part for which a donation is requested. Members of the congregation are also invited to join us for these refreshments before the service (from 5.15).

Wrap up warm; particularly as we shall probably sing the service in the chancel.

Music for the event: we use the RSCM Compline booklet (An order for night prayer in traditional language); copies will be available.
